In the 6 years since Emergence's birth as a church in North Jersey, God has done far more than we could have ever imagined. There have been churches planted, campuses launched, hundreds and hundreds of people baptized, marriages saved, addictions broken, homegrown missionaries raised up, hundreds of people walking in Christian community, Redemption & Recovery launched, hundreds of thousands of dollars given to helping people through benevolence, and more details than could ever be listed here.
The mission hasn't changed, and God isn't done saving until Jesus comes back.
20/20 Vision is the next step to unify our church family as we carry out this mission we've been given. Without these steps of faith you're about to read, we will not be able to continue to see this mission pursued without hindrance. We have limitations today that will hold us back tomorrow, unless we commit to this together.
The year 2020 is in the not-too-distant future. As we take a look ahead, these are the things we believe we, as a church, are called to, and, by His grace working through our faithfulness, dedication, and dependence on Him, we can see 2020 clearly.
By the end of the year 2020, Emergence will: SEND, SECURE, SEEK, START, and SUPPORT in new ways and through new opportunities.
We get to be a part of it--to see 20/20 together.
John 20:21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” (ESV)
By the end of 2020:
Emergence will have 5 campus scattered as Gospel outposts in North Jersey--adding a new campus in 2018 and another in 2019-20
Emergence will have sent out 2 church planters to birth new churches (Mike Reed with Church at Bergen, and Ryan Denos in 2019)
We will add another Church Planting Resident to our team in anticipation of another new church birth
SENDING CAMPUSES - OUTPOSTS OF LIFE IN NORTH JERSEY In 2014, two years after the birth of Emergence, a new campus was born. With that launch, more changed than just our church model. Communities and families have been changed, and the opportunities to see lives saved by Jesus have multiplied. Almost four years later, there are now three campuses of Emergence--outposts to proclaim the Gospel and expose many others to the family God has formed. Because of these sites, there are people brought to life in Glen Rock and Roxbury who were previously never connected to Jesus.
Sending out these campuses was an intentional decision brought about through two main needs. The need for space: with Totowa, even back in 2014, approaching capacity, our only option was to create more room by providing more locations and options. Were it not for these new campuses, we would not have grown in number over the course of the last few years. The need for locality: these new locations gave people from Emergence who travel long distances to weekend services a chance to be the church closer to home. As a result, they've been able to invite friends, relatives, co-workers, and neighbors who would have never been exposed to what God is doing in this church from afar.
By launching two new campuses before the end of 2020, we will together have the chance to reach into a brand new group of people with the Gospel.
Following God's guidance, we'll be led into two new communities over the next few years. He has always led us where we should be. And in the case of our next campus launch, He already has!
OUR NEWEST CAMPUS - LAUNCHING IN 2018 Every church wants to leave a legacy of impact in their community. Not every church gets to continue one, though. In 1963, Ringwood Baptist Church was founded with a commitment to the Gospel and to being used to build God's Kingdom. The impact that the church has made in our area is far-reaching, and their legacy extends for generations to come. For more than two years, the leadership of Ringwood Baptist Church and Emergence have prayerfully considered joining the history of RBC with the work God is doing through our church family. By God's grace, that consideration has turned into reality!
On August 30, 2017 the Ringwood Baptist Church property, including the church building, ministry building, a large plot of land, a lake, and a parsonage were gifted to Emergence for the purposes of starting a brand new campus there in 2018! The Ringwood Campus will launch as the 4th campus of Emergence, and will continue a beautiful legacy of Gospel-centered ministry at that location.
In addition to forming a core team of people committed to the new campus, we have the opportunity to invest in a fully owned property by renovating it for our use, based on a design that has already been completed!
Ringwood, here we come!
SENDING CHURCHES - IT'S IN OUR DNA
We are a sent people. God has placed us in North Jersey to bring with us the only power to save those all around us--the Gospel of Jesus.
Even before our launch as an independent church, we have been committed to planting churches. We added Mike Reed to our staff prior to our launch in 2012, with the intention to support him in starting a brand new church. With great joy, we cheered him and his team on as they launched Church at Bergen in 2013. Along the way, we provided support through bookkeeping, training, creative support, musicians, and financial help as CaB found its legs. This past year, Church at Bergen opened the doors of a new building in Paramus, and it wouldn't have happened without God using the Emergence family to see it through.
SENDING CHURCHES - COMING IN 2019 We've sent planters out from us multiple times--always with the goal and prayer to see new churches birthed and growing both deep in the Gospel and wide in their reach.
In the fall of 2019, by God's grace, we'll see it happen again as we send out our current church planting resident, Ryan Denos. A gifted teacher, and a called pastor, Ryan will take what he has learned in his residency here over the past couple of years and put it toward the work of planting a brand new church.
As Ryan begins a new church family, it is our desire to add another Church Planting Resident to the Emergence team, preparing another person to be sent out, equipped to pastor another new church in our area.
2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. (ESV)
When the Totowa Campus opened its doors on December 18, 2011, we rejoiced as we were in a new home with room to grow. Since then, we have rejoiced over and over again as we have seen God take that room and fill it to His glory.
Hundreds of baptisms later, and countless impacted lives later, the same campus that promised room for growth has reached capacity. While new sites bought us more room and more time, the strain of limitations are obvious: seats are scarce, the hallways are overcrowded, children's classrooms are reaching their limits, and a lease that turns back into a pumpkin in just a few more years, or becomes far more costly upon renewal.
It simply doesn't make fiscal sense, and wouldn't be wise stewardship, to add space onto our lease or renew at the current costs, when even holding a mortgage would have a lesser impact on our cash flow.
Totowa Campus' importance in sending out new campuses and advancing our mission as a church family warrants a step of faith to best prepare us for the future.
By the end of 2020:
Emergence will have secured a purchased location in or around Totowa with sufficient space for a 1000-1200 seat auditorium and support ministries.
Finding a location with enough space to house the current Totowa Campus for the future is no easy task. For this new facility, we would need a building with around 65,000 sq. ft. and land that would accommodate:
· an auditorium large enough to seat 1000-1200 people
· a children's wing with adequate space for 200-240 kids
· large areas for connecting with others through a lobby and cafe
· a large welcome and information center to connect visitors
· classrooms for adult classes like membership and Essentials
· a flexible office space for meetings, groups, or counseling rooms
· enough parking spaces to support the ministry (800-1000 spaces)
We have had a team working on this now for over a year. Surprisingly, we have found some suitable properties, but without monies in hand, our efforts to propose a purchase have been superseded by buyers with cash available.
2020 Vision will provide us with the necessary funding for a down payment and renovation costs for a new facility able to handle the growing ministry needs of our Sending Hub in or around Totowa.
SEEK "You do not have, because you do not ask" - James 4:2b
It has been almost four years since our second campus launched in Ridgewood, and almost 3 years since the Roxbury Campus was birthed. Though the mission has never changed, two things have changed often at our satellite campuses:
Locations: The "Nomad Award" (aka the resilient congregation award) goes to the Glen Rock Campus. This part of our church family has weathered much, but continues to live out the mission of God wherever they are placed. Even Roxbury (originally slated to open in Rockaway) endured a switch early on. The impermanence of these locations has provided a challenge that we have navigated as best we can, but has been less than ideal for the long term.
Growth: Both the Roxbury and Glen Rock campuses have grown consistently since they launched. Without the birth of these campuses, we would have had no room at the inn in Totowa the past few years. By families and individuals taking a step to help build these locations, they have not only begun new outposts for the Gospel, but also freed up space in Totowa for more people to be reached by Jesus there.
All around North Jersey, there are churches struggling with the future. Many of them are wrestling with the question of what to do in order to keep the ministry going. Meanwhile, in these same neighborhoods, other church families like Roxbury and Glen Rock are in need of facilities to see the work move forward. We long to see our satellite campuses find permanent homes and establish themselves in their communities. Together, we have always prayed that these campuses would move from "micro to merger" and that God would bring together churches longing for life and campuses longing for a home.
2020 Vision includes the launch of new "ambassador teams" in Roxbury and Glen Rock. These teams will begin proactive conversations with churches who may be interested in continuing the legacy they have sustained by joining together in the mission with Emergence, similar to what we see in the launch of the Ringwood Campus.
Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. Proverbs 11:14
God has placed us in North Jersey in a unique time. It's not hard to see the brokenness. Anxiety is at an all-time high. Drugs are killing families and young people. There is tension and tiredness everywhere we look. We know what North Jersey and the world needs is Jesus. God has done a special work in our area as people have looked to Emergence as a trusted place to share honestly. We see it in the number of calls we get regularly from people looking to be connected to trusted counselors who can walk them through hard situations, circumstances, and trials.
Because of these factors, by the end of 2020 we desire to start a new counseling center that combines Gospel-centered understanding with well-informed therapeutic practices. We believe God has placed us here as a voice to point to Jesus and meet people where they are. Through this counseling center, we will have that opportunity to love and minister to those both inside and outside our church family.
God has placed us in North Jersey as a unique people. Our latest survey of our congregation continues to confirm this beautiful thing God has done all around us: we are a diverse family. We're growing in ethnic diversity year by year, and we have continued to be a beautifully age-diverse family. It's an amazing blessing to see both young and old together pursuing Jesus.
The presence of younger, growing Christians in our church brings with it responsibility. By the end of 2020, we will, by God's grace, launch an accredited internship program, providing training and development for people pursuing ministry and exploring their gifts. We'll be able to build closer relationships with the Christian colleges in our area, and both be a blessing, and continued to be blessed, by these young disciples of Christ.
Matthew 28:19-20 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (ESV)
Jesus has placed us here to make an impact, empowered by His Spirit who affects not only those exposed to our local church, but well beyond our walls and families. To reach North Jersey and the world with the truth of Jesus and the hope He offers takes way more than Emergence.
In one of the most wealthy, comfortable regions on the planet, we have a call to help the Gospel go out to the ends of the earth.
Over the nearly six years since Emergence started, we have had the joy of developing amazing relationships with missionaries and local organizations and joining them in their work in numerous ways--prayer support, relational support, financial support, and sending teams to aid them in what they do so well.
By the end of the year 2020, Emergence will extend the reach of the Gospel by supporting church planters on six continents. Why six? Because we want to see the world reached by Jesus. The unreached people group in Antarctica will need to fend for themselves.
In addition to adding church planting missionaries, we will also start a new Partners in Planting initiative. Starting a church is hard, and much of the burden of a new church is the pressure to provide a salary for a new church planter. Through the Partners in Planting initiative, we will adopt churches in their first year of being planted by providing the salary for their lead pastor for an entire year. Through that year we will partner with them by providing ministry support in addition to finances, and we all will have the joy of hearing regular updates from them--knowing we are active participants in the multiplication of the Gospel.
MAKING VISION REALITY
To see this 2020 Vision become reality, it will take prayer, much labor, commitment, and, of course, the funding to see it through.
Some of these things can happen without added capital cost. Others will take the sacrificial action of many people who love Jesus, and are committed to investing in this future picture.
Funding this vision will include:
· $1.5M for a down payment for a new sending hub facility
· $2M for renovations and build-out of a new sending hub facility
· $500K for renovations to the new Ringwood Campus (launching in 2018)
· $500K for contingency costs, ensuring these vision projects are provided for
To fulfill this vision & our three-year goal of $4.5M "above and beyond" our normal giving, we need Emergence families to step up in faith and sacrifice.
As a family, please pray about these key levels of generosity and ask God to guide your giving to see this vision become a reality that you have participated in and He has provided for through you!
Together, we can leave a legacy that will impact generations to come and see the Gospel reach even further into the lives of people right here in North Jersey!
